What Happens When a Vessel Owner Has Passed Away?

When a vessel owner passes away, the first thing we need is a certified copy of the Death Certificate.

From there, we determine how the vessel was owned.

Why Does the Manner of Ownership Matter?

If there were multiple owners, we need to see exactly how their ownership was listed.

For example, the vessel may have been owned:

  • By one individual
  • By multiple individuals with a survivorship designation
  • By multiple individuals without survivorship rights
  • By a Trust or other entity

That determines who now has the legal authority to transfer the vessel and what additional documentation will be required.

Depending on the ownership, we may need estate, probate, trust, survivorship, or other supporting documents before the vessel can be sold or transferred.

The bottom line

If an owner has passed away, don't sign or change anything yet.

Send WaterProof a certified copy of the Death Certificate and the vessel's current ownership documents.

We'll determine how ownership was held and tell you exactly what documents are needed to move forward.

Every situation is a little different, but once we establish the manner of ownership, we know which path to take. ⚓
